Beta is estimated, not guaranteed
An altcoin hedge ratio based on historical Bitcoin sensitivity can reduce broad-market movement, but beta varies by token and regime. Token-specific events can overwhelm the hedge. Report residual exposure and realized hedge effectiveness rather than assuming neutrality.
A temporary Bitcoin hedge can reduce risk after a failed altcoin leg, yet it creates a second position. Policies should define approved instruments, hedge duration, sizing method, and unwind conditions.
Spot-futures basis
A dated future above spot may support cash-and-carry: buy spot, sell the future, and hold toward expiry. The apparent return must include financing, margin, custody, fees, and the possibility of venue disruption before convergence.
Annualized figures can exaggerate short-dated spreads. Show the raw difference, time to expiry, capital requirement, and stress scenario together. Cross-venue basis adds collateral fragmentation and liquidation risk.
Perpetual funding
Perpetual contracts exchange funding payments according to venue-specific rules. Historical funding is not locked and can reverse. Index composition, mark price, collateral currency, and liquidation rules affect the trade independently of spot price.
Backtests should use actual contract data and funding, not substitute a spot series. Scenario tests include funding reversal, mark divergence, collateral decline, and delayed hedge exit.
Portfolio and venue controls
Several altcoin trades may share a hidden Bitcoin factor. A central portfolio view should aggregate Bitcoin-equivalent exposure, gross notional, basis concentration, margin use, and scenario losses. Net beta near zero does not eliminate gross liquidity needs.
Collateral held on one venue cannot necessarily meet a margin call on another. Conservative buffers and venue caps are core to the basis calculation, not after-the-fact controls.
Research with instrument fidelity
Archive the prices, funding, index, mark, fee, margin, and contract specifications used by the intended strategy. Continuous futures series can hide rolls. Public fee tables can differ from account tiers. Disclose uncertainty where source data are incomplete.
A Bitcoin-linked trade is a portfolio of claims and dependencies. Its edge should be evaluated only after each claim has a settlement and failure plan.
